Executive in Residence: Inspiring Research-Driven Thinkers with Dr Olabode Oyewunmi

In every generation, a few thinkers manage to connect ideas with action; people who don’t just teach concepts but show how those concepts drive results in the real world. Dr Olabode Oyewunmi is one of them.

With a career that spans law, corporate governance, academia, and advisory roles, he represents the perfect balance of scholarship and strategy. His work brings clarity to how institutions, people, and systems interact and how knowledge can be transformed into meaningful impact.

A Solid Foundation in Law and Governance

Dr Oyewunmi’s academic journey reflects his multidisciplinary approach to problem-solving. He began at the University of Lagos, earning a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.), followed by a Barrister-at-Law (B.L.) qualification from the Nigerian Law School in 2003. His early legal training gave him a strong grounding in reasoning, argument, and ethical decision-making, skills that would later shape his approach to corporate and organisational governance.

Determined to broaden his global perspective, he pursued an LL.M. in Petroleum Law and Policy at the University of Dundee in the United Kingdom. This period deepened his understanding of energy governance, regulatory frameworks, and policy reform, areas central to Nigeria’s economic landscape.

In 2016, he completed his PhD in Corporate Governance at Covenant University, where he developed an even sharper focus on institutional systems, leadership accountability, and resource management. His doctoral research became the cornerstone of his later publications, which address the pressing challenges of governance, transparency, and ethics in African organisations.

Law, Academia, and Advisory Practice

Before fully stepping into academia, Dr Oyewunmi honed his expertise in the legal field. He worked as a solicitor and legal practitioner at Abugu & Co. Solicitors, specialising in commercial law, taxation, real estate, energy, and insurance.

In 2011, he transitioned into academia, joining Covenant University as a senior lecturer, a role he held for over 13 years. During this period, he combined teaching, cross-disciplinary research, and consulting in higher education and corporate advisory. His work covered topics such as industrial relations, human resource management, and corporate governance, equipping students and professionals with the tools to lead ethically and effectively.

Beyond teaching, he contributed significantly to academic literature. His papers, such as “Spiritual Intelligence and Employee Outcomes in an African Sample” (2021) and “Speaking Silence: Abusive Supervision, Subordinates’ Citizenship Behaviour, and Whistleblowing Intention” (2022), explore how leadership behaviour, ethics, and spirituality influence workplace performance. Earlier, his 2016 study on transparency in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry examined policy re-engineering as a pathway to sustainable governance.

In recent years, his professional reach has expanded internationally. Since 2024, he has served as a lecturer at the University of Essex Online, where he brings African and global governance perspectives to a diverse student body. He also works as an advisory specialist at Middlesbrough Citizens Advice Bureau, providing guidance on legal, financial, and social matters, further reinforcing his dedication to practical service and societal impact.

While much of Dr Oyewunmi’s profile highlights his intellectual achievements, there’s also a deeply human side to his work. His long-standing interest in topics such as spiritual intelligence and employee well-being reveals an individual who values empathy as much as expertise. His writing and teaching reflect a belief that leadership must be both effective and humane and that research should not only solve problems but also make lives better.
