On September 17 and 18, 2025, Miva Open University marked two major milestones with the official opening of the Langtang Community Centre and the Jos Study Centre in Plateau State.

Plateau State, known as the “Home of Peace and Tourism”, is celebrated for its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and its long-standing commitment to education and community development. These qualities make it the perfect home for Miva’s mission to expand learning opportunities and build pathways for success.

Giving Back: The Langtang Community Centre

At the heart of Langtang, the CEO of the uLesson Group and Chancellor of Miva Open University, Sim Shagaya, gave back to his roots with the opening of the Miva Langtang Community Centre. Located at No. 153 Solomon Lar Way, Police Station Bridge, Langtang, the community centre is designed to nurture learning, inspire growth, and create opportunities for the people of Langtang.

This centre provides a safe, well-equipped space for young people to learn, connect, and access opportunities that might otherwise be out of reach. For the wider community, it symbolises hope—an investment in future generations and a catalyst for local development.

The Sim Shagaya Community Centre Scholarship

A highlight of the opening was the announcement of the Sim Shagaya Community Centre Scholarship, launched in partnership with Miva Open University. This initiative gives indigenes of Langtang North and South the opportunity to pursue any undergraduate programme at Miva at a flat tuition fee of ₦150,000 per session.

What This Means for Langtang Youths

For students, the scholarship represents far more than just a reduction in fees. It offers affordable access to quality higher education. With the freedom to choose from a wide range of undergraduate programmes, learners can now pursue their true passions and career goals with less stress.

Beyond the relief it brings to families struggling with costs, the scholarship gives young people the confidence to dream bigger. By equipping them with skills and knowledge that prepare them to compete not just locally, but nationally and globally, it lays the foundation for a generation of leaders, innovators, and change-makers who will shape the future of their communities and beyond.

For the Langtang Community

For the larger Langtang community, the impact is just as profound. More sons and daughters of the soil will gain access to higher education, returning as professionals who can contribute directly to the community’s growth and prosperity.

Families who were once worried about the financial demands of university education for their children, amongst other responsibilities, will now find relief, as the scholarship eases financial pressure and keeps opportunities within reach.

At a deeper level, this initiative strengthens the very fabric of Langtang society. By investing in its young people, the community secures a stronger foundation for future leadership and development. It ensures that the values of resilience, ambition, and service to others continue to flourish, carried forward by a new generation empowered to give back.

The Jos Study Centre: A Hub for Excellence

The very next day, on September 18, Miva Open University proudly opened the Jos Study Centre, located at No. 3, Beach Road, Jos.

This Miva Jos Study Centre is built to give students the right environment to excel. Facilities include:

  • Fast Wi-Fi for seamless online learning
  • Comfortable student lounges for collaboration and relaxation
  • A physical library and an e-library for research and focused study
  • An admissions office for all admission enquiries
  • A fully equipped CBT centre for exams

In attendance were Gen. John Tyemlong, retired General of the Nigerian Army; Dr Jemchang Fabong, former Director General of the Plateau State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (PLASCHEMA) and Senior Technical Adviser to the Minister of Social Policy; Hon. Abel Nimchak, Member of the Plateau State House of Assembly (Langtang North-North); and Mrs Salome Sarki, retired Director of Nursing Services, Abuja.

Before cutting the ribbon, Rtd Gen. John Tyemlong said, “What [Simdul] is doing in the society is to give knowledge and education to people; it’s something that you are giving them for life. Once you irrigate society, you have put them on the pedestal of being self-sufficient and self-reliant and exploring the frontiers of knowledge to better their lives for the future. And so we are grateful and happy for this.

“The good Lord who has opened it will make this place serve not just the current students but students who will come in the future, and He will open more doors to the glory of God and mankind. And that humanity will continue to gain from this, and we will never forget what this gentleman and his team have done and are doing.”

More than just infrastructure, the Jos Study Centre creates a supportive environment where learners can focus, connect, and thrive. It equips students with the tools they need to excel in their studies while easing the challenges of learning in under-resourced environments.

By offering both modern facilities and on-the-spot academic support, the centre ensures that every learner has the opportunity to succeed. And while they’re on campus, they can also shop the Miva merch, adding a touch of fun and community spirit to their study experience.
