Executive-In-Residence: Understanding the People Behind Business Decisions with Dr Omotola Adedapo

Businesses often invest in new technology, better systems, and bigger strategies. Yet behind every successful organisation are people who make those plans work. Understanding how people think, work, and grow is what separates good leaders from exceptional ones.

That is where Dr Omotola Adedapo has built her career.

As a human resource expert, consultant, career coach, and organisational development specialist, she has spent years helping organisations build stronger teams and helping professionals build meaningful careers. Today, she brings that practical experience into the classroom as an executive-in-residence at Miva Open University, giving MBA students a front-row seat to the realities of leading people in today’s workplace.

An Unconventional Academic Journey

Dr Omotola Adedapo’s academic journey is a reminder that careers do not always follow a straight line.

She began with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta. Her academic foundation was in science, but her career would eventually take her in a very different direction: towards people, workplaces, leadership, and organisational development.

She later earned a Master of Industrial and Labour Relations in Industrial Relations and Personnel Management from the University of Lagos, completed between 2014 and 2015. This marked a significant shift in focus and gave her a stronger understanding of the relationship between people and organisations.

Her academic journey continued into business and leadership. She holds an honorary Doctor of Business Administration in Leadership and Business from London Bridge Business School.

Together, these experiences have shaped the way she approaches her work. Her scientific background brings curiosity and structured thinking, while her training in industrial relations and business has given her the tools to understand people, organisations, and leadership.

It is this combination that makes Dr Omotola Adedapo particularly interesting as a thought leader. Her career shows that the skills we develop in one field can often become valuable in another when we are willing to keep learning and evolving.

Students do not simply meet an HR expert. They learn from someone who has spent years listening to people’s stories, solving workplace challenges, and helping others grow with confidence.

Bringing Real-World Leadership into the MBA Classroom

At Miva Open University, Dr Omotola Adedapo serves as an executive-in-residence for MBA 8107: Organisational Behaviour.

The course explores one of the most important aspects of business leadership: understanding people. Students learn why employees behave the way they do, how workplace culture develops, what motivates teams, and how effective leaders build organisations where people can perform at their best.

With her extensive industry experience, Dr Adedapo makes these concepts practical and relevant. She connects classroom discussions to real business situations, showing students how organisational behaviour influences leadership, decision-making, employee engagement, and business performance.

More importantly, she encourages students to think beyond management theories. They are challenged to become thoughtful leaders who understand that every business decision ultimately affects people.

That combination of academic learning and professional insight gives students a richer learning experience and prepares them for leadership roles across industries.
