Mental health care is not just about diagnosing conditions or treating symptoms. It is also about understanding people, the challenges they face, and the support they need to live better lives.
This understanding has shaped Dr Nanribet Mwoltu’s career spanning clinical psychology, substance use treatment, research, and public health. Today, as Associate Director of Mental Health Services at Heartland Alliance Nigeria, he helps design and deliver mental health services for communities that often face barriers to care.
With more than a decade of experience, Dr Mwoltu brings a practical understanding of what it takes to turn mental health knowledge into meaningful support for people.
Building a Foundation in Psychology
Dr Mwoltu’s journey began with psychology at the University of Jos, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology.
His academic training gave him the foundation to understand human behaviour, assess mental health conditions, and support people through psychological challenges. He has since built on that foundation through professional training in areas such as trauma-informed care, cognitive behavioural therapy, substance use treatment, and global mental health.
These skills have proved valuable throughout his career, particularly in settings where mental health needs are complex and access to appropriate care can be limited.
From Clinical Practice to Community Mental Health
Dr Mwoltu’s career has taken him from clinical practice to programme management and leadership.
He began gaining practical experience at Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he worked as a clinical intern. He later joined the Netwealth Center for Addiction Management in Jos as programme manager, supporting addiction treatment services and working with clients, staff, and other stakeholders.
In 2017, he moved into a lead psychologist role at Heartland Alliance International in Nigeria. There, he helped develop and integrate trauma-informed mental health and psychosocial support services for key populations affected by HIV. This work required an understanding of both individual mental health needs and the wider social challenges that can prevent people from seeking care.
He subsequently served as a senior mental health technical advisor before becoming associate director of mental health services at Heartland Alliance Nigeria in 2023.
In his current role, Dr Nanribet Mwoltu provides technical oversight for mental health services under HIV-related projects, supports the training and supervision of healthcare workers across 10 states, and helps ensure that interventions are guided by evidence and measurable outcomes.
His work reflects an important lesson: effective mental health care requires more than clinical knowledge. It also takes thoughtful programme design, collaboration, and an understanding of the communities being served.
Research That Asks Important Questions
Dr Mwoltu’s work also extends to research. His publications explore psychological distress, substance use, trauma, and access to mental health support among underserved populations.
In a 2024 study published in PLOS ONE, he and his co-authors examined the prevalence of psychological distress among key populations in Nigeria and the factors associated with it. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the mental health challenges faced by people who may experience stigma or discrimination when seeking care.
He also co-authored a 2025 study on health anxiety among healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The research examined the psychological pressures healthcare workers faced and highlighted the need for targeted mental health support.
Together, these studies show how research can help identify gaps in care and inform better responses. For Dr Mwoltu, evidence is not simply something to publish. It is a tool for understanding problems and improving the services designed to address them.
Bringing Real-world Experience To Miva
As an Executive in Residence for Mental Health (MPH 8212) for the Master of Public Health programme at Miva Open University, Dr Nanribet Mwoltu brings this experience into the classroom.
Students studying public health need more than an understanding of mental health conditions. They also need to know how to assess community needs, interpret research, plan interventions, and evaluate whether those interventions are making a difference.
Dr Mwoltu’s experience across clinical practice, research, and public health programmes offers a valuable perspective on these challenges. His work provides practical examples of how mental health services are designed, delivered, and evaluated in real-world settings.
For students, this means learning to connect theory with the realities of public health practice, including the challenge of delivering effective care to people who may be underserved or overlooked.
Why This Matters for Public Health Professionals
Mental health is an important part of public health, but responding to mental health needs at scale requires more than good intentions. It calls for professionals who can use evidence, understand communities, develop effective interventions, and assess their impact.
Learning from an experienced practitioner like Dr Nanribet Mwoltu can help students build this broader perspective. Whether they plan to work in healthcare, research, government, development organisations, or community programmes, they can gain insights into the decisions and skills that support effective public health practice.
At Miva, the goal is to help students develop the knowledge and practical understanding they need to take on these responsibilities with confidence.
