For Josiah Yahaya, that question has shaped a career that has moved from software development and open-source projects to fintech, artificial intelligence, product management, and technology communities.
Today, he is a technical product manager at Moniepoint Group and a technology professional passionate about community development, fintech, blockchain, and AI. At Miva Open University, he brings this experience into the classroom as an executive in residence, helping students connect technology concepts with the problems businesses are trying to solve.

A Foundation in Biological Sciences
Josiah Yahaya’s academic journey did not begin in computer science. He studied Microbiology at the University of Mkar. While his degree gave him a foundation in the sciences, his professional interests soon took him in a different direction.
Technology became an area where he could combine curiosity with problem-solving. He went on to build his skills through professional training, including a PHP course from SoloLearn and a Python for Data Science certification from DataCamp. In 2018, he also received a PHP Innovation Award.
Rather than being constrained by his academic background, Josiah’s journey shows how learning in one field can provide a foundation for exploring another.
From Writing Code to Building Solutions
Before product management became a major part of his career, Josiah Yahaya was deeply involved in software development.
He built projects such as PHPConsole, a Windows application that allows users to write and execute code across technologies including PHP, Laravel, JavaScript, VueJS, HTML, and CSS. He also developed iLumni, a platform designed to help schools and colleges manage alumni communities, events, jobs, communication, and payments.
His work also extended into other areas. His public portfolio includes projects such as iSchool, a school management solution, and Paystack Mirror, a PHP library built around Paystack’s payment infrastructure.
This period of his career was not simply about writing code. It was about understanding problems and building tools that could solve them.
That mindset would become useful as his career moved closer to products and business.
Building Technology, Products, and High-Performing Teams
Josiah Yahaya began his career in 2013 as a software engineer at JConnect NG, where he built applications and websites for churches, businesses, and individuals. During that time, he also worked as a technical officer at the University of Mkar Entrepreneurship Study Centre. Later, he became chief technology officer at ValueBeam Ltd in 2015, where he managed the company’s engineering operations.
In 2019, he joined PATRICIA as a software engineer and quickly progressed to lead software engineer, then engineering lead. During this period, he worked on payment infrastructure, crypto-powered debit cards, Patricia Pay, Patricia Exchange, and other financial technology products. He also led engineering teams and mentored developers.
As engineering manager at PATRICIA, Josiah Yahaya led more than 30 engineers and worked across teams in finance, blockchain, real estate, e-commerce, and lending. He also helped redesign the company’s payment processing system, increasing its capacity from about 10,000 transactions per day to more than one million.
In 2020, he also worked as a lead software engineer at Dedicated.ai, where he helped coordinate product roadmaps, built AI-powered tools for businesses, and worked with stakeholders across the engineering department.
In 2023, Josiah Yahaya joined Billboxx as engineering manager. In 2024, he moved into technical product management at Moniepoint Group, where he currently leads the delivery of technology solutions across the financial services ecosystem. His work involves defining product requirements and roadmaps, working with engineering, design, data, and business teams, and translating business needs into scalable products.
Alongside his industry career, Josiah has remained committed to technology education and mentorship. He has written extensively about software development, emerging technologies, and projects he has built on Medium, while also contributing to developer communities and sharing his technical knowledge with others.
In August 2025, he joined Miva Open University as an executive in residence, where he brings his experience in technology leadership, product management, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship, and digital transformation to students. He teaches Information Technology Management and AI in Business and Industry, helping learners connect what they study with the realities of building and managing technology in the real world.
Exploring Fintech, Blockchain, and AI
Josiah’s work has continued to sit at the intersection of technology and real-world problems.
His interests include fintech, blockchain, and artificial intelligence, and he has worked on projects that explore how emerging technologies can be applied in practical settings. His public work includes contributions around blockchain and healthcare, including ClinicBank, where he explored the use of smart contracts to connect patients with healthcare providers.
He has also remained connected to the developer community. Josiah Yahaya previously led PHP Arewa, a community of PHP developers in northern Nigeria, and has participated in wider developer communities and events.
That combination of technical experience and community involvement has helped shape a broader view of technology: one that goes beyond building software to thinking about who it serves and what problem it solves.
Bringing Industry Experience to Miva
